Introduction
This section of the site is principally a collection of tools and
resources for assessors undertaking Tier 2 and Tier 3 assessments,
researchers, and government agencies (e.g. ERMA).
Limited numbers of practitioners or regulatory staff in New Zealand
undertake, audit or review Tier 2 assessments using models, and refining
guideline values to site-specific conditions and contaminant
characteristics.
However, as regulatory agencies are becoming more
familiar with the risk assessment process, they are tending to require
higher levels of justification for risk management decisions,
particularly in urban areas. As a result, it is considered that there will be an increasing need
for Tier 2 assessments in New Zealand.
There are only a handful of sites
in New Zealand that will require a Tier 3 assessment.
"Advanced risk assessment"
provides detailed information on the models best suited to New Zealand
conditions, contaminant characteristics, and international resources.
In addition, detailed research into contaminant behaviour in
the New Zealand environment and ecotoxicology of New Zealand native and
naturalised species is presented.
For methodological information on undertaking a risk assessment,
refer to "Introductory risk
assessment".
One of the key outcomes of this site was
to provide
New Zealand-specific data for
risk
assessment. The information in the following links contains
details of various testing protocols and results that New Zealand Tier 2
and 3 assessors will find useful.
The tools and resources in this section
include the following:
NEPM framework for Tier 2 and 3 risk assessment
For methodological information on undertaking a risk assessment,
refer to "Introductory risk
assessment". For details on undertaking a risk assessment at
Tier 2 or Tier 3, please follow the links below. The methodology is
broadly based on Australia's
National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination)
Measure (NEPM) 1999.
